I recently read a book called The Rock, the Road and the Rabbi by Kathie Lee Gifford. The first chapter blew me away! The Lord had shown me that His love is the binding force that holds everything together. This realization was tied into that.
K. Gifford said a rabbi tour guide in Israel told her, “Many people think the miracle in the story is how David, a young shepherd boy, was able to defeat the giant, Goliath - the champion...” He said that all shepherds were trained to protect their flocks. So that was not the miracle. “The miracle of David and Goliath is that David had an intimate relationship with the living God! THAT’S WHAT MAKES A MIRACLE!”
This hit me over the head with a realization that had been hovering near the surface but just burst forth.
Take any miracle from the scriptures or even your own life. The fact that God healed or helped someone find their keys is not the miracle. Our God is all powerful. Why should we be surprised?
We are surrounded on every side by miracles. We are living, walking, seeing, hearing, sensing miracles. Every part of us is so intricate and finely tuned that our very lives are miraculous machines and science has just barely scratched the surface of how our bodies work. Look at the delicate balance of life on earth, plants, animals, the sun, water, air... All of it is a miracle! The earth is a testimony of the greatness, the power, the creativity, the awesomeness of the God who created us. Miracles surround us! As long as we are breathing we are experiencing thousands of miracles all of the time.
Healing, finding keys and protecting us is not the miracle. “My God is so big, so strong and so mighty, there’s nothing that He cannot do...” The miracle is that we can have a personal relationship with the God of the universe! It's a miracle that the God of the universe knows us intimately and his love permeates our whole being like the atoms that form everything on earth.
In my own life, the miracle is not that He saved me from drowning when I was 7 years old. The miracle is that He showed me His love and care for me before I really knew Him. Everything I have thought of as a miracle, I’ve thought backwards. When I look at all of life as evidence of a great and mighty God, then look at me - a nothing - a tiny speck on a tiny planet hung in a huge universe - the miracle is that I can have a relationship with HIM. It's amazing!
If you think about it for very long, it will blow your mind! He knows your name. He formed you in your mother’s womb. You are fearfully and wonderfully made. He knows how many hairs are on your head and every thought you think. Just wrap your mind around that!
Maybe this is why so many times we pray for miracles and they don’t seem to happen. We have overlooked the most obvious, the greatest miracle of all. The biggest miracle is a relationship with God through His son Jesus and the Holy Spirit. It is through this relationship that we can have a supernatural divine empowerment from the the Almighty God.
Layer after layer it is becoming clearer. Praise God from whom all blessings flow!
